Qantas’ Network Aviation eyes new Embraer 190 planes in major fleet renewal for WA fly-in, fly-out workers

Qantas is eyeing up to 14 new planes to replace its decade-old Fokker 100 aircraft servicing WA’s lucrative fly-in, fly-out market and regional travellers. QantasLink has announced the Embraer 190 as the preferred aircraft for a fleet renewal program at its WA-based regional operation Network Aviation. The program would see its Fokker F100 aircraft retired and replaced with up to 14 E190s. Qantas on Wednesday said it was currently assessing sourcing options for mid-life E190 aircraft, targeting first delivery towards the end of 2026. It said Network Aviation — which operates charter and FIFO services across WA, as well as regular passenger flights — would benefit from the enhanced fuel efficiency, reliability and improved passenger comfort. Qantas earlier this month announced the closure of its struggling Jetstar Asia business and would bring home the budget carrier’s fleet of Airbus A320s. Network Aviation is set to receive four of these planes, which are set to enter service before the end of the year. QantasLink chief executive Rachel Yangoyan said the fleet renewal represented a significant investment in the future of its regional aviation capabilities, as well as the airline’s commitment to serving WA’s mining sector and regional communities. “The E190 is a proven platform that operates across Australia today and will deliver improved operational efficiency and reliability, while also creating opportunities for our people in the west,” she said. Fortescue chief executive Dino Otranto said the new fleet would bring more comfort and reliability for its workers. “With more than 50 flights a week out of Perth, we’re on track for around 640,000 passenger movements this financial year — a clear reflection of how vital our partnership with Qantas and Network Aviation is to keeping our operations running efficiently,” he said.
