Airlines for Australia and New Zealand (A4ANZ) will soon have a new chief executive just 12 months after their previous top boss came into the role.

The airline lobby group has announced that Emma Wilson will step aside as chief executive to be replaced by Stephen Beckett.

Mr Beckett joins the industry group from Virgin Australia where he serves as general manager of government and industry affairs. His appointment starts October 20.

In late 2024, Ms Wilson took over from Alison Roberts, who served as A4ANZ’s inaugural chief executive for the first seven years.

A4ANZ is the peak representative body for airlines operating out of the two countries.

The group represents Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas, Rex and Virgin Australia.

A4ANZ chair Graeme Samuel paid tribute to the outgoing top boss.

“Emma has provided great leadership during her tenure, particularly while guiding A4ANZ’s advocacy throughout the Australian government’s Aviation White Paper process.”

Professor Samuel said he was delighted to welcome a leader of Mr Beckett’s calibre to the organisation.

”Stephen brings exceptional experience across aviation, tourism and transport policy, with intimate knowledge of the strategic and operational challenges facing our industry,” Professor Samuel said.

He said the immediate focus for himself and the new boss would be to ensure the Australian and New Zealand aviation sector remained efficient, competitive and sustainable.

“Aviation is an essential service that connects our communities, drives economic growth and creates jobs across the region,” he said.

“Our immediate priorities will be ensuring air travel remains accessible and affordable for consumers while supporting our member airlines’ ability to operate sustainably and continue connecting communities across Australia, New Zealand and beyond.”
