The West Live is back with a bang — and a new host.

WA’s favourite daily news podcast will return from today, hosted by one of The West Australian’s chief reporters, Ben O’ Shea.

With years of experience at The West, O’Shea will bring listeners across the State not only breaking news but the stories behind the stories.

“We’re very excited about bringing The West Live back this year,” O’Shea said.

“We had a massive first year, covering the pandemic, Mark McGowan’s popularity and the border closures.

“This year, it’s going to be even bigger, as we talk to the taste makers and newsmakers of Perth.”

O’Shea will kick the podcast off with a interview with WA boxing world champion Danny Green, who has taken aim at the young men involved in vicious fighting at Scarborough over the weekend.

Green, who lives in the area and also operates a Green Zone gym in Scarborough, has spent years fighting to have the term “king hit” replaced by “coward punch”.

Research by Green’s Stop the Coward’s Punch campaign showed 99 per cent assailants in reported attacks across the country between 2005 and 2011 were men, half of which are aged between 18 and 23. About 70 per cent of attacks were carried out between 10pm and 4am and 12 per cent resulted in death.

Ben O’Shea will also speak to Nationals leader Mia Davies, who joins O’Shea to talk about the future of the party in a post-election landscape.

With the podcast relaunching less than two months out from the State election, listeners can expect to be clued in on the news that really matters.

“It’s great to be back with a dynamic new host,” executive producer Natalie Bonjolo said.

“We’ve got a fresh new show and we will be hitting the big topics hard, with access to the big names in Perth and our State’s leading decision-makers.”
