Investor delight as John Welborn’s Fenix Resources decides to dust off low-grade Shine iron ore mine

More than 150 jobs are set to be created in the Mid West region after the board of Fenix Resources resolved to bring an unloved iron ore mine back online this year. Fenix told shareholders on Thursday it will outlay $7.4 million to restart output from the Shine mine, which is located about 225km east of Geraldton. Production is slated to commence during the December quarter and Fenix is aiming to haul 100,000 tonnes of iron ore per month to Geraldton Port. Shares in Fenix jumped 14.8 per cent in early trade on Thursday and are now up 30 per cent so far this year. Fenix executive chairman John Welborn told The West Australian last month that the company’s next board meeting would revolve around evaluating a commissioning decision on Shine. The Shine mine was shut down by Mt Gibson Iron in 2021 and nearly two years later Fenix picked up the discarded asset as part of a $25m bundle deal along with two rail slidings and two Geraldton Port storage sheds. Shine was binned by Mt Gibson due to the relatively low-grade nature of its ore, with a current mineral resource estimate of 15.1 million tonnes at an average grade of 58 per cent iron. Fenix intends to extract the higher-grade Shine ore first to ship a 60 per cent grade product at a cost of $US45.50 per wet metric tonne. Mr Welborn has told The West that Fenix is also weighing up blending Shine’s ore with higher-grade material from the company’s growing network of iron ore mines in the Mid West. The former Wallaby said Shine’s revival would generate “at least” 150 roles. The Iron Ridge project is Fenix’s flagship mining operation, which sustains about 200 workers, and the company also runs a direct shipping ore enterprise from the Twin Peaks mine. Mr Welborn also wants to start mining the Beebyn W11 deposit in “early 2025”. The iron ore spot price is currently hovering around $US110 per tonne. It started the year at more than $US140/t before dropping to $US100/t by early April.
