Secret Opera hides the singers to explore Wagner’s own soap opera and the inspiration of masterpieces

Question: What kind of opera has no singers? Answer: A Secret Opera, if Chris van Tuinen has his way. The WA Opera artistic director’s Perth Festival project goes behind the scenes to find the secrets of the genre, its inspiration and origin. Enter along a post-industrial laneway, down metal stairs festooned with candles and flowers to a dive bar with a central stage. Van Tuinen and executive director Carolyn Chard greet a 100-strong audience with drinks and pretzels in a laid-back social ambience; summer prints, jeans, linen jackets. “We’re so wedded to the lyric theatre experience,” Van Tuinen says. But this is different. We’re in Liberty Lair, the basement of the darkened Liberty Theatre, to hear the soap opera behind Richard Wagner’s masterpieces; his second marriage to Cosima, the daughter of Franz Liszt and inspiration for Wagner’s seminal work, the Siegfried Idyll. It predates the opera Siegfried, Van Tuinen explains, and fuelled Wagner’s late-career resurgence with Parsifal years later. Written for Cosima’s birthday, it was first played by a 13-strong orchestra smuggled into their home on Christmas morning, 1870. Opening in gentle strains from strings, the musicians glow like a Christmas tree with clip-on LEDs and a warm wash from low-level lighting as woodwind lifts the temper supported by trumpet and horns. We’re a long way from mainstage Wagner, with none of the high drama of the Ring Cycle. It’s a basement in more ways than one; an underground theatre, but also the fabric underlying one of opera’s more creative outbursts. Ebb and flow give way to a reset in horns (Rob Gladstones and Riley Eakin) then a celebratory march, fading to romance in woodwind. It’s an intimate experience for an audience in promenade mode; some standing around high bar tables, others seated, most with glass in hand. A mix youth and experience in the orchestra, featuring tender violins (Helena O’Sullivan and Anika Collins) and flute (Jessica-Monique Bojanjac) complementing clarinet (Clare Waters and Sarah Bond) and oboe (Aiden Labuschagne), lend a frisson to a love song to savour, down to the last, velvet chords. WA Opera plans more secret surprises at three other pop-up venues this year. Liberty Lair will reopen soon as a jazz bar.
