Best time and place to watch supermoon rise Monday night revealed

Australian sky gazers are in for a treat with the first supermoon of the year to rise tonight.

The full moon will appear brighter than any other lunar event that has occurred this year when it rises this Monday.

The moon will become 100 per cent full at about 9:38pm AEST.

However, if you want to catch the moon at its largest, you’ll be better off looking up just after the sun goes down, as it appears larger when it’s closer to the horizon.

Supermoons occur when the moon’s orbit is the closest to Earth at the same time it is full.

As the moon doesn’t orbit our planet in a perfect circle, there are points where it is closer than others, making it appear larger in the sky.

The last supermoon occurred in August 2022.

Unfortunately, some cities will have better luck with the weather in terms of catching a glimpse of the supermoon.

The majority of the major cities -- Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth -- are expecting cloudy or rainy conditions which will make moon spotting much more difficult.

However lucky residents in Canberra, Hobart and Darwin should have clear skies to watch the moon rise.

There will be three other chances to view a supermoon in 2023, the last of which will rise on September 29.

This year will also come with other special lunar events, with two supermoons to occur in August.

The largest supermoon is expected to be August’s blue or second moon for the month.
