Sydneysiders are being asked for their say on renaming a public space in the city's inner-west 'Pride Square' to celebrate the LGBTQI community.

Inner West Council voted earlier this year to rename Bedford Square outside the council's town hall to Pride Square.

The council is also considering a rainbow crossing in the inner-city suburb.

The proposals are part of the council's bid to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people ahead of World Pride next year.

Geographical Names Board chair Narelle Underwood said her agency wanted everyone to have the opportunity to give feedback on the proposal to rename the square.

"It is important that place names reflect the diversity of our communities," she said.

Bedford Square, which has already been dubbed Pride Square by GoogleMaps, is outside Newtown Town Hall, opposite Newtown Station.

People can give their feedback through the Geographical Names Board website before submissions close September 18.

The board is looking to gauge how the community feels about the matter before deciding to make it official.
