Mazda has revealed a new range-topping variant of its BT-50 ute which is exclusive to Australia.

The BT-50 Thunder is based on the previously top-spec GT 4x4 dual cab and will add a more aggressive appearance thanks to parts developed by Mazda Australia’s in-house engineering team when it goes on sale next month.

The front end gets a single hoop steel bull bar and a Lightforce dual-row LED light bar, while 18-inch black alloy wheels, wide fender flares and side steps add to the side profile’s appearance.

At the rear is a premium sports bar and an electric roller tonneau, which securely covers the tub liner for additional tray protection.

‘Thunder’ decals on the tub sides help it to further stand out, while under the bonnet is the same 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine found in the wider BT-50 range.

The additions haven’t come cheap, with the Thunder costing $65,990 with a manual transmission and $68,990 for the auto.

It’s $9000 more than the GT’s asking price, but Mazda says the Thunder adds more than $13,000 worth of gear.

Early buyers however will benefit from introductory drive-away price of $65,990 for the manual and $68,990 for the automatic.
