The all-new second-generation Renault Captur has launched in Australia, available in three variants starting at $28,190 plus on road costs.

Though pricier than many mainstream offerings in the light SUV segment, the entry point puts it in the realm of other European-built fare such as the Nissan Juke, Ford Puma and Volkswagen T-Cross.

All variants have a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine offering 113kW and 270Nm, paired to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic and using a claimed 6.6L/100km.

It retains the sharp styling of the first-gen Captur, but the packaging has improved.

Though still residing in the light SUV segment, it has grown 110mm longer to offer 17mm more rear legroom and — most impressively — a big, family car rivalling 536-litre boot.

A big effort has been made to improve the interior, with better materials and Renault’s “Smart Cockpit” design which features a smaller steering wheel for better view of the instrument display.

Standard gear on the entry level Life includes a 7-inch infotainment screen, heated door mirrors, auto headlights, smartphone mirroring, front and rear parking sensors with rear-view camera, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and full-LED headlights.

The mid-spec Zen costs an additional $2600 and adds perks such as a heated leather steering wheel, two-tone paint, automatic climate control, auto wipers, wireless phone charging and additional safety kit such as blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert.

The top-spec Intens gets drive modes which also change the car’s lighting, a 9.3-inch portrait touchscreen, satellite navigation, auto-dimming rear view mirror, BOSE sound system, 7-inch TFT driver display, LED interior ambient lighting, 360-degree camera and leather upholstery.

The Intens also has a new ‘flying centre console’ with an ‘E-Shifter’ gear selector on top and additional storage space and wireless smartphone charger below.

To keep the style-conscious happy, buyers can choose from up to 16 colour combinations.

The Captur’s arrival coincides with local distributor Ateco taking over the brand’s Australian operations this week, after Renault announced in February it would hand over how the brand is run locally.
