Cherubino City Cellar review: the entrance almost feels like a trap but only good things lie within

It almost feels like a trap. At the back of a nondescript building, next to a bin in the carpark, is a little blackboard. On it someone has scrawled “WINE”, with a little arrow pointing inside. There’s no signage to speak of, and it’s not immediately obvious which door one should (or shouldn’t, as the case may be) walk through. But there are only good things inside. Cherubino City Cellar falls off the radar only because it’s hidden away and doesn’t scream at you from the street, so maybe it just slips your mind when you’re thinking of lunch in Subi. It’s thoroughly memorable in every other way. First of all, it’s a wine shop and bistro. The walls are lined with vins rouge, and the fridges are stacked with chardonnay and champagne and everything in between. They’re all available to drink on the premises or take home. It’s an all too rare but truly fabulous offering. The plush, cleverly designed room is conducive to lunches, long and sensible. The menu of classics is of the “I’ll have one of everything” variety. The service is polished but also pleasingly genial. The big skylight makes you feel as though you’re close to the clouds. A barrel-aged classic negroni, $25, with a bespoke ice cube will have you up there on No.9. We’re the only guests for a good hour on a rainy weekday and feel at once grateful for the keen attention we’re receiving and anxious to go and tout for customers, who surely should know better than to be elsewhere. A crudo of coarsely minced beef, $29, is the stuff of textbooks: it’s not fridge cold, the neon egg yolk looks as though it came from a very happy bird and the sprinkling of crushed pistachio an inspired twist. It comes with shards of Melba-ish toast and is impossible to devour daintily. It sounds pretentious to describe a dish as an experience but the roasted marrow, $19, which arrives on the bone aflame, sending the scent of rosemary into the air, is just that. There’s squirts of fancy butter and bread that could’ve been . . . doughier? Petty gripe. Music says a lot about a restaurant. Many a think piece has been devoted to the art of curating a restaurant playlist. Spotify has a Restaurant Playlist, featuring songs the uncultured restaurateur might thoughtlessly crank out. The well-chosen songs playing here at a pleasing volume included Pasta by Angie McMahon. We needed no further encouragement. It’s wide ribbons of pappardelle with a white-wine braised lamb ragu, $34. There’s a depth of flavour that betrays a long, slow cook, and just a sprinkle of parmesan — nothing more is required. Given the love that’s clearly been put into the dish, it’s a steal. A magnificently funky mushroom risotto, $33, is pleasingly heavy on the porcini, deeply flavoured and a spectacular-looking dish. Like everything else, it also constitutes superb value. It felt right to have a glass of owner Larry’s namesake On the Fringe chardonnay but you’re not locked in to his wine (although we wouldn’t complain if we were). I’ll remember to return ASAP. The verdict: 18/20 This is hands down one of the cosiest, classiest places around to eat and drink.
