Croff Bakehouse
Giselle Sim and Harold Bong took a big swing when they opened Croff Bakehouse in 2020, relying on former accountant Sim’s love of baking croissants and Bong’s passion for flavour. It paid off, with the husband-and-wife duo now opening a new flagship in West Leederville. The new space on Southport Street will feature all of the sweet and savoury pastries as well as a new brunch menu alongside breads and coffee.
Kyha
In exciting news for brides to be, lusted-after Australia bridal brand Kyha has now found a new home at Juliet Studio in Subiaco. Instead of flying over east, brides can now try on the gowns from the label within the stylish boutique over a glass of prosecco. It currently stocks pieces from the Waterlines and Chroma collections — we can’t take our eyes off the timeless Emery gown — with fittings by appointment.
Winter Solstice Dinner
To warm diners up during the longest evening of the year, North Fremantle restaurant Pearla & Co is cooking over an open flame for a one-night-only seafood cook-up. Situated across the road from the restaurant, chef Scott Bridger and his team will have smoked oysters, a whole fish and rotisserie Freo octopus — as well as mulled cider and a special smoky dessert — to celebrate the June 20 date. The set menu is $165 with matching wines an extra $75, with more details and bookings at pearlaandco.com.au.
Greek by George Calombaris
Hot on the heels of David Thompson’s Fireback residency, the next pop-up for the former Bistro Guillaume site at Crown Perth has a menu weaving together the flavours of Greece and the produce of WA. With stand-outs including spanakopita-baked Abrolhos Island scallop, local marron kritharaki with stracciatella, and barbecued Fremantle octopus with spicy green latholemono, the well-known Australian chef’s stint will run June 19-July 18. It’s open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday. Bookings via crownperth.com.au.
Age Of Reason
If you love John Farnham — and who doesn’t? — WA singer-songwriter Jayda D’Agostino will perform her popular love letter to the man whose music defined her childhood at The Ellington on June 16. After a sold-out debut season at Fringe World, D’Agostino brings her personal Farnham favourites to life along with stories of coming of age and figuring out life. The WAAPA graduate will perform with a six-piece band at the show; see ellingtonjazz.com.au for tickets.
Nock Loose
WA author Patrick Marlborough’s novel is billed as a “screwball comedy revenge thriller, Game Of Thrones meets Wake In Fright meets Kill Bill meets The Simpsons”. And that intriguing combination is drawing a crowd; the book has just had a third print run, with bonus content. Nock Loose is set in a fictional town in WA’s South West called Bodkins Point, which has, for 150 years, hosted an annual ultra-violent medieval festival. The book has been described as feral, madcap and bonkers and Marlborough as “Australia’s own energy-drink-era Vonnegut”, so prepare for a wild ride. It’s out now via fremantlepress.com.au.
