The Albany Boardriders Club is marking an exciting milestone for the Southern Ocean Surf Reef, celebrating one year of the multi-million dollar project being completed.
July marked a year since the artificial reef was officially opened, making Middleton Beach a new hotspot for Albany surfers, and the club is holding a small celebration to mark the occasion on Thursday.
The reef was officially opened on July 16, 2025, after four months of work to get the granite rocks in place and years of advocacy from local surfers before that.
It was originally designed to produce beginner to intermediate level waves, but ABR members say that with the winter swells, the reef has started to produce more challenging waves, making the break suitable for everyone from first-timers to experts, depending on the day.
Club members will be putting on a sausage sizzle at Surfers Beach from noon to celebrate the reef’s one-year anniversary, with the community invited to come along to recognise a successful year of the reef in action.
