Albany rangers investigating attack after Maltese Shih Tsu was mauled by unrestrained dog in Spencer Park

City of Albany rangers are appealing for information regarding a Spencer Park dog attack where an unrestrained dog mauled a small Maltese Shih Tzu three times in 15 minutes last month. The attacks occurred between 5.45am and 6am on May 22, on Hardie Road, Dickson and Lindfield streets and Lindfield Crescent. The small white Maltese was being walked on a leash by its owner along Hardie Road towards Dickson Street when it was first attacked by a brindle-brown coloured American Staffordshire-type dog. The attacking dog was unrestrained and accompanied by a man riding a bicycle. It then proceeded to attack the smaller dog twice more on nearby streets. A city spokesperson confirmed that the Maltese dog survived the attack but suffered several injuries. City ranger coordinator Carl Fjastad said that all dog attacks were taken seriously and owners were often prosecuted for not taking due care and endangering the community. “Many of these sad and unfortunate incidents can be avoided if dog owners take proper responsibility for their animals,” he said. “Whether it’s ensuring fences and gates are secure or keeping dogs on a leash in public spaces, these are simple steps that make a big difference. “Dogs are not simply pets to be welcomed into your life without taking on the full responsibility that comes with them. “They require proper care, training, and attention — particularly when in public. “Failing to meet these responsibilities can have not only serious legal and financial consequences but also lasting emotional impacts on everyone involved.” Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information or CCTV footage is urged to contact the rangers on 6820 3999 or email ranger@albany.wa.gov.au.
