Albany’s Youth Challenge Park will be pumping on Friday, with a range of workshops for riders and skaters to officially launch the new youth hub.

Coinciding with the Southern Peaks Festival, the launch party will be an opportunity for park users to brush up on their skills and meet new people.

Avid skaters have already been making use of the new facilities, which include a 2.1m deep skate bowl, skill park, dirt jumps and a 900sqm pump track believed to be one of the biggest in the country.

The launch party will begin at 4pm at the park on Sanford Road with skatepark coaching workshops from Freestyle Now for skateboarders, scooter and BMX riders.

Beginner sessions will be held at 4pm and intermediate from 5pm with an all-in session from 6pm-9pm.

From 6pm, there will be a DJ, food vendors and displays from local businesses.

City of Albany chief executive Andrew Sharpe said although the official opening had been pushed back because of COVID-19, it was a great opportunity to launch the park as part of the Southern Peaks Festival.

“The timing of our launch for Youth Challenge Park lined up perfectly with the biggest local biking event of the year, so locals and visitors can really give the new park a good test run,” he said.

“The Youth Challenge Park will offer a safe, social setting for our youth to remain active, network with other like-minded people, and develop their physical and mental competency.”

Attendees are encouraged to use the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre car park.

Coaching session participants are required to wear a helmet and closed-in shoes. To register for the sessions, visit bit.ly/39rAvlb.
