Teenager Flynn Breuker jumped at the chance to surf the point near Middleton Beach for the first time during Albany’s week of wild weather.

Heavy rain lashed the Great Southern earlier this week and Breuker, who works with his father Craig, jumped in at Middleton Beach after knocking off from work on Tuesday.

A heavy swell brought big waves to the usually calm Ellen Cove.

The swell was coming into Albany from the south-east, with the Weather Bureau warning that the “unusual swell direction” could expose typically protected areas of the coastline to big waves.

Normally one for surfing popular local spots such as Nanarup, Mutton Bird and Cosy Corner, Breuker said it was a cool experience to surf “The Point” with his father, who had done it plenty of times before.

“We came home from work and Dad convinced me to go out,” Breuker said.

“It was more for the novelty of surfing the point than anything else.

“He’s surfed it a few times before but it doesn’t happen all the time.

“I’m sure it brought back a few memories for him.

“You need more of a south east swell and it was big in size and getting in there.”

The 18-year-old electrical apprentice said there was a handful of local surfers taking full advantage of the sizeable swell.

“It was different that’s for sure,” he said.

“The water was so cold.

“You are surfing right next to the rock and you look up and can see people on the boardwalk.”
