Hundreds of entries as musicians and singers get a taste of performing on the big stage at Albany’s Eisteddfod

The 45th Albany Eisteddfod attracted more than 300 entries over four days of competition and concerts which took place at the Albany Entertainment Centre. The annual event showcases the best of classical music in the Great Southern with musicians and singers coming from Albany, Denmark, Walpole and the surrounds. Albany Eisteddfod Committee vice-president Michael Hyder said using the AEC gave the performers the feeling of walking out on to a big stage. “It gives the students a real taste of what it’s like to perform in a big auditorium and it provides an opportunity for musical development and appreciation of music within the wider community,” he said. He is hoping to make the AEC the home of the Eisteddfod. “We would like to make it our permanent venue,” he said. “This event is like no other in the region and truly exhibits great community spirit, encompassing independent music teachers, parents, schools, music lovers and volunteers across the community.” The event, which ran from June 9-12, attracted participants aged from three to 73 and featured a huge variety of instruments including string, woodwind and brass instruments as well as singing. The performers were marked by professional adjudicators with the winners in each category coming together for the final Showcase Concert which featured 28 high-quality performances. Eisteddfod is a Welsh word and usually describes a competitive festival of the arts.
