A Sea of Hands proudly showcasing the Aboriginal and Australian flags will sweep across Albany on Wednesday as part of a display of unity to mark National Reconciliation Week amid the pandemic.

Reconciliation Week, from May 27-June 3, calls on all Australians to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, and to champion respect across all communities.

Albany’s Baldjamaar Foundation hatched a creative plan this year to celebrate unity and connection — while staying apart.

Usually marked with a ceremony, this year’s commemoration will see the community create a Sea of Hands display at the Albany Town Square.

Baldjamaar Foundation chief executive Damien Yarran said the display would remind the community of the importance of working towards ongoing reconciliation.

“It is important that we walk forward into the future together and have a better understanding and respect for both sides,” he said.

“We wanted to create a positive display in our community, add a bit of colour and get the wider community involved.”

Albany residents are encouraged to design or download a hand to contribute to the community display at the Albany Town Square from 9am on May 27.
