Great Southern players Arty Jones and Mitch McGovern have had their AFL seasons ended in tough elimination final losses at the weekend.

Jones, who has been a revelation for the Western Bulldogs this season, kicked two goals in a lively display but his side was knocked out by Adelaide on Saturday night.

On Friday night, McGovern’s team Carlton were defeated by Geelong as their 2026 campaign also came to a close after a superb second half of the year under new coach Josh Fraser.

North Albany product McGovern, 31, has enjoyed a strong season with the Blues in a new-found forward role and played 25 games.

However he had a quiet night in the 33-point loss to the Cats at the MCG, managing just three disposals, two marks and two score involvements.

The loss put a full stop on the Blue’s remarkable season, after they came back from a 1-8 win-loss start to the season to win a wild-card final.

At Adelaide Oval, Jones booted two goals in the second term to continue his wonderful season in Doggies colours.

The 23-year-old had four score involvements and three inside 50s to go with five touches and three tackles.

The Crows emerged 22-point winners on their home deck, as the Bulldogs bowed out having beaten Collingwood in a wild-card final last week.

Mt Barker-raised Jones played 20 games for the Dogs in a breakout season, kicking 27 goals as a dangerous small forward.

Meanwhile Railways junior Jordan Clark will be desperate to keep his season alive this weekend after Fremantle were shock qualifying final losers on Thursday night.

Clark produced a brilliant performance in his 150th AFL game, taking a huge high-flying mark over Jack Ginnivan and being his side’s best player with 38 disposals, 11 marks, 549m gained and eight intercept possessions.

The Dockers, having finished on top of the ladder, were outgunned by 32 points at Optus Stadium and now face a sudden-death semifinal at home to Geelong this Friday.
