Skipper Stephen Brown claims winter series, Lloyd Pascoe wins Brass Monkey Trophy

Lloyd Pascoe skippering his division two boat Arkessa sailed to a surprise victory in last Saturday’s sixth and final heat of the winter series at Princess Royal Sailing Club to claim the Brass Monkey Trophy.

However, Stephen Brown, who competed in all four heats that were conducted, earned the Winter Series Cup.

Two heats were abandoned because of severe weather conditions but last Saturday was just perfect; warm with a gentle southerly that eventually dropped away after all boats had finished their race.

Pascoe with only one crew member began well and keen to race without the use of a spinnaker.

He was able to stay in touch throughout but not quick enough for the two Flying Fifteens which had skipped away to a handy lead.

Stephen Brown and Neil Worrell in Zuri were having their own private contest as they chased the two Fifteens.

Crazy skippered by Aileen Lucas was flying in the light breeze but was overhauled by Simon Lucas in FForever Young who stayed in the lead right to the end.

Arkessa was still impressing with the ability to stay close, while Zuri and Mary Maitland were still chasing the Fifteens all the way.

FForever Young was the first to cross the line but was relegated to third place though did record the fastest time in another fine effort.

Neil Worrell had done enough on handicap to take second place but Arkessa picked up the trophy.

Brown, who has scored consistently with Mary Maitland, was rewarded with the series trophy in a mighty performance.

Sailing now goes into winter recess and racing will resume mid-October for the start of the 2022-23 season.
