Spencer Park Primary School students brought their voices out into the community on Wednesday, staging what was dubbed the “Hardie Road Tour” with musical public performances.

The school choir and percussion group spent their day walking and performing along Hardie Road, starting at the Spencer Park IGA and continuing on to the Clarence Estate home care centre and residential buildings.

The group of almost 50 students performed a range of songs to enthusiastic audiences at all three stops on their tour, with the community pausing their shopping trips to listen to some of their youngest members sing in the IGA, and residents appealing for an encore at Clarence Estate.

Music teacher Naomi Swann said the idea behind the tour was to give back to the local community.

“We want to do something selfless with our gift of music,” she said.

“Our vision is for the kids to understand that it’s about giving something to others, not about how much they can gain from performing.

“Both singers and audiences had a blast, and there were some really special moments.”

SPPS music students had visited Clarence Estate before to sing for residents, but Ms Swann said the IGA stop was a new addition to the walking tour, and said she hoped for the project to evolve in coming years to include more businesses and organisations on Hardie Road.

“At the end of the day it’s about giving back to the community and doing something nice,” she said.

“There are more places on Hardie Road we can get involved with, so I hope we can expand it to four or five places in a day in the coming years.”
