Superb racing kicks off Albany Speedway Club’s 60th anniversary season in style with bumper nominations

A huge field of competitors converged on Albany to celebrate the speedway’s 60th anniversary. A special 60 laps for 60 years teams event between production sedan and street stock drivers was the highlight of a meeting that had more than 100 drivers in the pits from a variety of divisions. The Formula 500s made a return to the venue for the West Coast Series and the popular legend cars were also on the program. The opening round of the KJB Junior Sedan Challenge was contested while the Formula 125s, a division that has been a stronghold in Albany for many years, were also racing on Attwell Park Speedway. Albany youngster Cody Colmer took out the top stars final in the juniors, holding off Jesse Hamon and Riley Udecz over 20 laps. Harley Goodlet was the other junior sedan winner, claiming the new stars 15-lap feature race in a close battle with Jack Foster and Bella Crowe. Sam Jewell had a dominant time in the driver’s seat in the Formula 125s, going on to win the 15-lap final by more than eight seconds over Cameron Tester while Braiden Jewell finished third. In the legend cars, Ken Melvin was the form competitor of the event and he went on to win the 20-lap final comfortably. Melvin finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Travis Gould at the chequered flag. Shane Whild took out the street stocks final narrowly, collecting top points for his teams pairing, and Katanning-raised and now Albany local Kye Blight blasted his way to an impressive win in the production sedan final of the 60 laps for 60 years initiative. The November 8 meeting kicked off what is a huge 60th anniversary season for Albany Speedway Club and came after hundreds attended a cocktail dinner the previous day to celebrate the club.
