The Waifs: Folk rock band postpone show after vocalist Donna Simpson injured in Broome e-scooter crash

Aussie singer-songwriter Donna Simpson from popular folk rockers the Waifs has been involved in a “horrid” e-scooter crash in Broome. In a statement, the Waifs announced Simpson had been flown to Perth with serious injuries. “She suffered a collision on a horrid e-scooter and broke four ribs as well as two collapsed lungs,” the statement on social media said. The vocalist, guitarist and songwriter was then rushed to Royal Perth Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. While the exact date and the circumstances of the crash remain unknown, it is reported to have occurred after the band’s show at the Roebuck Bay Hotel in Broome on September 24. “She is currently recovering well, but doctors have recently informed her she will not be able to fly for another five to six weeks,” the band’s statement said. As a result of her injuries, a show set for Friday in Geelong — as part of the Waifs’ 20th anniversary Australian tour — has been postponed until March next year. “Donna plays an essential role in the Up All Night concert tour show, and it would not be the experience you were looking forward to without her participation,” the band’s statement said. Donna’s younger sister Vikki Thorn also sings and plays harmonica in the band. Josh Cunningham is the trio’s third member. Formed in 1992, the Waifs have been celebrated across Australia for their music and have won four ARIA awards. Thorn — an Albany local — was recently announced to headline the Melville Summer Music series. The free 10-concert series will feature several musicians across Melville parks and reserves when it kicks off in November and ends in March.
