Cupcakes and animals — what is there not to love?

That is the cheerful combination to star at RSPCA WA’s annual fundraiser to fight animal cruelty, Cupcake Day.

Unfortunately, this year there has been a drop in registrations and donations, so the RSPCA wants more people in Albany to get on board.

The organisation is calling on animal lovers to bake some yummy treats and save Cupcake Day, with every dollar raised going towards helping sick, injured and neglected animals.

Retirement community Ingenia Gardens will be hosting an event on Monday.

Residents Susan McKay and Bruce De Ver Hunt want other animals to be as loved as their pets are.

RSPCA WA Great Southern inspector Georgina Brown said Cupcake Day was one of the RSPCA’s biggest fundraisers.

“Unfortunately, registrations for the event have been lagging this year, and as a result it looks like we’re going to fall far short of our target,” she said.

“But there’s still time for animal lovers to get on board and help save Cupcake Day, by hosting a baking event of their own any day in October, or by donating to a friend’s, family member’s or even stranger’s event through the Cupcake Day website.

“RSPCA WA relies on the community for the majority of the funding needed to help animals and give them a second chance. So your fundraising really does change lives.”

Ms Brown also took the opportunity to remind pet owners to keep their animals safe as the weather got warmer. Summer is one of the busiest periods for RSPCA WA,” she said.

“In the Great Southern we’ve already started receiving reports about pets left without shelter or water, and dogs suffering in hot cars.”
