Margaret River Volunteer Fire and Rescue in line for new station after $1.8m in funding received

Volunteer firefighters in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River are finally set to see action on their long-awaited new headquarters.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services this week confirmed receipt of $1.8 million from the State Government to progress plans for the new Margaret River Volunteer Fire and Rescue station on Clarke Road, next to the existing State Emergency Services headquarters.

Acting Commissioner Melissa Pexton said the land — acquired when the project was first announced more than five years ago — would cater to the brigade’s growth.

“The MRVFRS station have outgrown their current station, built in 1956,” she said.

“The station cannot accommodate the expanding brigade membership and modern firefighting vehicles, which are larger and heavier as they carry more equipment.”

An estimated date for the new station is yet to be provided.

Ms Pexton said the next steps were the finalisation of design plans and a tender for a building contractor to be released later this month.
