A Queensland shopper has been praised for stepping in and tackling a man accused of assaulting four people at a Woolworths supermarket in Brisbane’s north.
Police allege the 25-year-old man approached a female employee at the Banyo store on Tufnell Road about 11am on Wednesday and struck her in the head with two bottles.
He allegedly continued assaulting the woman after she fell to the ground.
A member of the public intervened and pulled the man away from the employee before he allegedly turned on three other people nearby.
The shoppers then restrained the man until police arrived.
Kevin Price, who was doing his weekly shop at the supermarket, told Nine News he heard a commotion coming from the self-checkout area.
“I heard a commotion, a couple ladies screaming,” Mr Price said.
He then stepped in as the man was allegedly throwing punches.
“I guess I had to get him off kilter and off balance, so I just did that,” he said.
Dramatic footage from inside the supermarket shows Mr Price wrestling with the man before taking him to the ground, with other shoppers then rushing in to help restrain him.
Police arrived shortly afterwards and arrested the man.
The female Woolworths employee and three men were taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Banyo man has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of serious assault person over 60.
His case was mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.
A Woolworths spokesperson thanked the store team, customers and emergency services for their response.
“There’s no place for violence like this anywhere in our community, and every retail worker deserves the right to a safe workplace,” the spokesperson told Nine.
“We’d like to thank the quick-thinking actions of our store team and other customers, as well as the timely response of emergency services.”
