Gantheaume Pointers and Bombers neck-and-neck in men’s A-grade standings

It was another competitive round of basketball in the Broome Basketball Association men’s A-grade competition, with the Bombers and Gantheaume Pointers now neck-and-neck in the standings.

The Bombers were tested by the Tigers as the two teams battled it out under the lights of the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre basketball courts on Wednesday, September 17.

Despite the Bombers’ Julian Cox claiming the first basket of the night, the Tigers quickly took control of the court, with Jarman Cox and Thomas Lawford scoring a total of nine points to take the lead by the first break, 17-14.

But the Bombers took back the lead in the second quarter, with Chris Hunter carrying the side with seven points, 31-23.

The Tigers started to claw their way back in the third, with Cox sinking an impressive 10 points over the course of the quarter, but the Bombers held steady with 11 points of their own, 42-35.

The Bombers dominated the start of the final term, with Cox sinking 11 baskets and Emmett Clements entering the fray with a two-pointer, but the Tigers struck back, nearly taking the lead before their run was cut short by the siren, 53-52.

Despite the loss, Cox led the scoring for the match with 31 points, while fill-in player 36 scored the most baskets for the Bombers.

Elsewhere, the Gantheaume Pointers rocketed to a solid lead in the first quarter of their match against the MP Boys, with Dhaarshnna Krisshnan Murithi leading the side with seven points, 16-2.

The MP Boys found their feet in the second quarter, sinking five baskets to close the gap to nine points, while the Pointers held steady with four baskets, 24-15.

The Pointers started to fall behind in the scoring in the third, with the MP Boys shooting another five baskets to the Pointers’ three to close the margin going into the final quarter, 30-25.

With five minutes left on the clock in the final quarter, the MP Boys were within one point of catching the Pointers. However, thanks to three late term baskets from Murithi and Tom Schorer the Pointers secured the win, 40-34.

The Pointers’ Timothy Jones, Murithi and, Tom Schorer led the scoring on 12 points each, while fill-in player 15 was the top scorer for the MP Boys on nine points.

The Pointers and the Bombers now sit in first and second place in the standings respectively with two wins and one loss each.

In the social men’s competition, the Peninsula Bombers clinched the win from the Misfits 39-37.

Daniel Aspey and Seth Malcolm led the scoring for the Bombers on nine points each, while fill-in player 18 for the Misfits was the top scorer of the match on 16 points.

The Cobras also clinched the win from Bayside by five points, 51-44, with Bayside’s Simone Cox leading the scoring with 13 points, while Jack Jeavons was the top scorer for the Cobras on 11 points.

Broome Best Cleaning Services claimed a dominate win over the Spoonbills, 63-36, with Broome Best Cleaning Services’ Jerome Geneston leading the scoring with 19 points.

Troy Douglass was the top scorer for the Spoonbills on 16 points.

The Hornets also claimed a strong win over the Saints, 44-25, with the Hornets’ Alburquerque Hunter leading the scoring with 17 points, while Don Manjengwa was the top scorer for the Saints with 11 points.

In the women’s competition, the Drifters destroyed the Basket Casers, 56-19, with the Drifters’ Delycca Cox leading the scoring on 20 points, while Abbe Orrick was the top scorer for the Basket Casers with eight points.

The Raiders just managed to take home the win from the Lady Tigers in a close match, 41-38, with the Raiders’ fill-in player 26 leading the scoring on 20 points, while fill-in player 4 for the Lady Tigers led her team with 19 points

The Lady Nets had a bye but will return to play on September 24 against the Basket Casers.
