Local singer takes silver at Jiu-Jitsu State champs
Broome local and lead signer of local band, Desert Rose, Damar Isherwood took home a silver medal in her division at the Submission Grappling (SGT) State Championships in Perth earlier this month, marking an impressive debut in competitive jiu-jitsu.
Competing for the first time, Isherwood, 24, was placed in the 58.5kg division, stepping up a weight class after there were no other competitors in her original category, white belt.
Despite facing four experienced athletes, the local musician showcased skill and stamina, securing second place in her division.
“I thought being bumped up a weight class would set me back,” Isherwood said.
“Even a few kilos makes a difference in grappling, but it turned out OK — actually, very well.”
Leading up to the competition, Isherwood’s preparation included a month-long Muay Thai training camp in Thailand.
“That fitness helped me immensely,” Ms Isherwood said.
“I didn’t even sweat on comp day, I felt physically prepared.”
Isherwood has been training in jiu-jitsu for just a year at the Broome Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club, after recovering from wrist injuries sustained during weightlifting.
Despite the sport being male-dominated, she’s noticed more women joining martial arts in recent years, inspired by athletes like Ronda Rousey (Ultimate Fighting Championship and WWE champion).
Looking ahead, Isherwood plans to continue training and aims for gold in the next competition.
“I know exactly what I need to work on now,” Isherwood said.
“I’ll be back next year to give it my best shot.”
Her advice to anyone considering martial arts?
“Just try it — you never know until you try! I never thought I’d compete, let alone win silver,” Isherwood said.
