A bushfire that threatened lives and homes in Bindoon on Friday evening has been contained.

There were fears for property during the intense fire, which has burnt through 189 hectares of land, but authorities downgraded the fire’s alert level to ‘watch and act’ just before 9pm.

An evacuation centre was set up for residents escaping the blaze at the Bindoon Town Hall.

One hundred and twenty firefighters, supported by aerial water bombers, are battling the blaze on the ground.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze was reported at 1.45pm on Friday and started near Gray Road.

DFES said the bushfire was ‘contained and stationary’.
