Youngsters steeled for Ironkids

Children from across the Capes and South West will kick off Busselton’s 2018 Ironman WA festivities with the Ironkids competition tomorrow.

The “kids only” version will see seven to 10-year-olds swim 100m, ride 2.25km and run 1km, while 11-13-year-olds will swim 200m, ride 4.5km and run 2km.

Tramain Way, 9, of Busselton is looking forward to competing in his first event tomorrow.

“When Dad suggested I do it, I thought ‘OK, why not’,” he said.

“I’m doing a lot of training with Dad at the moment... lots of swimming and running, and we ride our bikes a lot anyway.”

Tramain also plays Australian Rules football for the Vasse Royals and recently competed at an inter-school cross-country competition.

“I came ninth overall for my age group out of six schools, so I was pretty happy with that.”

While the Ironkids event is non-competitive and no placings are awarded, Tramain’s father Stu, who is a coach at Dunsborough’s The Movement Fitness and Wellbeing gym, and owner of Busselton’s Health Freak Cafe, will keep his son’s time.

“It’s my first Ironkids, so I will try my best and see how we go,” Tramain said.

“Dad will time me so I have a goal to work towards for next year.”

Ironkids face the starter at 8.30am tomorrow at Busselton Foreshore in front of The Equinox.
