Car collides with retaining wall after alleged high-speed police chase

A man has been charged after a high-speed police chase that allegedly ended in an assault in Sydney’s southwest.

It comes hours after another police pursuit in the city’s south ended in tragedy when a 19-year-old driver crashed into a barrier.

Just after 11pm on Friday, highway patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle after it was allegedly seen running a red light at the intersection of Guildford Road and Woodville Road in Guildford.

When the vehicle failed to stop, police initiated their pursuit.

Police followed the car down Chiswick Road, where they allege the car reached a speed of 140km/h.

Officers called off the pursuit over safety concerns, but soon after, the car collided with a retaining wall, crashing into a parked car before rolling onto its side.

The 37-year-old male driver attempted to run from the scene but ran into a local resident.

He allegedly assaulted the 27-year-old male resident before he was overpowered and restrained.

The resident suffered minor injuries.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man allegedly threw a bag of cannabis at police before he was arrested.

The 37-year-old Yagoona man returned a positive reading for illicit substance when he underwent an oral fluid test at Merrylands Police Station.

A breath test returned a negative result for alcohol.

He was charged with seven offences, including not stopping during a police pursuit, driving without lights and negligent driving.

His driver’s licence was also suspended.

The Yagoona man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

Driver dies after police pursuit in city’s south

A 19-year-old driver is dead after he crashed during an early morning police pursuit while he allegedly tried to avoid a radar trap on Friday.

The incident will come under review after the driver collided with a barrier on Alfords Point Road before crashing into the back of another ute moments after police began their pursuit.

The 19-year-old man from Oyster Bay died at the scene.

The incident closed the major road during peak hour traffic, causing significant daily delays.
