He managed only seven games this season, with a leg injury and preferred ruck-forward Darcy Cameron both keeping him from playing consistent senior footy.

Just when Cox appeared on the outer at the Pies, Max Lynch’s move to Hawthorn opened up a spot for him to stay with the club.

“We are pleased to be in a position to retain Mason for another season,” Collingwood general manager of football Graham Wright said.

“We know Mason can play a number of roles for us. Players capable in the ruck and up forward offer great versatility to a team. We believe he has a lot to offer our group.”

On social media, Cox said he was pleased to have recommitted to Collingwood.

“I’m excited to be a part this talented young group of men this year and can’t wait to be a part of the journey,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Good times are on the horizon and you fans should be excited for what’s to come. (New senior coach) Craig McRae is the best in the business when it comes to developing young talent and he’s exactly what this team needs.

“Y’all make him feel welcome along with the rest of the new coaches and stick with us side-by-side this year!”

Ahead of the 2022 season, Collingwood has moved to re-sign youngsters Trent Bianco, Jack Ginnivan and Trey Ruscoe as well as captain Scott Pendlebury.

Nathan Kreuger and Patrick Lipinski have joined the club from Geelong and the Western Bulldogs respectively for McRae’s first year in the hot seat.
