Mother of Mandurah hit and run victim Jamie Murray believes son would be alive if help had been called

The mother of hit and run victim Jamie Murray believes her son would still be alive if help had been called after he was left dying on the road in March this year. Speaking outside of court on Tuesday, Robyn Murray said her son was alive for nine minutes after he was found injured lying outside his Dudley Park home on March 1. Minutes earlier, inside Mandurah Magistrates Court, via a Tagalog interpreter, a sobbing Analiza Sagang Curtis pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to stop and ensure assistance was received after an incident occasioning death. Following negotiations, police dropped a more serious charge of being a driver involved in an incident occasioning death, who failed to report the incident against Curtis. In a shock twist, Curtis’ partner John Eliezer Amatiago Edullantes was charged with being in control of a motor vehicle and, when in the close proximity to a person harmed, gave false information to WA Police. Mr Edullantes was not required to enter a plea in relation to the charge and will reappear in court later this month. Curtis’ lawyer Peter Bueneventura asked for a psychological report to be prepared before his client was sentenced as she’d been suffering from depression and anxiety since the accident. Curtis and Mr Edullantes brought their infant daughter to court – but Magistrate Leanne Atkins ordered she be removed by a family member after she began to cry during proceedings. Mr Murray was left to die on Boundary Road in Dudley Park after being struck by a Kia Rio Hatch. The 45-year-old father-of-two was found unresponsive on the road in the early hours of the morning. Police officers tried to revive Mr Murray, but he could not be saved. Outside court, his mother, Ms Murray said she wished the couple, who lived on the same street as her son, had called for help. “He might still be here because he was alive,” Ms Murray said. “It’s hard, his little one is only four, so he doesn’t understand, but the older one, because he and Jamie used to do everything together, he’s taking it pretty hard.” Ms Murray and her partner Geoff Piper said they had nothing to say to Curtis. “The police put the message out there everyday, just take it easy and drive safely,” Mr Piper said. “If by chance you do have an accident, just stop and report it to the police straight away. “They wouldn’t be in half as much trouble, Jamie might be here if she’d done that. “Jamie was still breathing and he was still alive, when they actually found him it had been a while, so it could be that Jamie would still be with is if they’d rendered assistance really quickly.” Mr Piper thanked the police and recognised the outpouring of sympathy from the community. Outside of court, Curtis and Mr Edullantes lawyer Peter Bueneventura said Mr Murray’s death was an accident. An emotional Curtis and Mr Edullantes tried to approach Ms Murray to apologise, but they were warned to stay away from the grieving family. Mr Murray was a well-known and popular member of the Mandurah community. He was employed at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre for two decades and was remembered as a gentle, well-liked and devoted father. Curtis is due to be sentenced at Perth District Court on July 25.
