A donation box and religious icon worth up to $10,000 have been stolen from a church on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Two men are believed to have jimmied open the front door of Red Hill's Holy Monastery of Panagia Kamariani about 12:30am on February 10.

The thieves made off with the wooden donation box containing money and distinctive religious icon.

The church has been a target of thefts in 2014 and 2016, when a framed gold-plated icon of the Virgin Mary and about $300,000 worth of gold chains, watches, coins and rings were taken.
