A Northern Territory woman has allegedly shoved an elderly man out of his mobility scooter and stolen his carton of beer.

Police say the 75-year-old man was on his way home from an Alice Springs bottle store about 5.30pm on Thursday when the woman allegedly came at him from behind.

The man tried to flee but the woman, 48, was too quick.

She allegedly grabbed the back of the man's scooter and tipped it over, causing the man to fall to the ground.

The woman then alleged physically assaulted the man and stole his carton of beer, a spokeswoman said.

A passer-by helped the man off the ground and alerted police.

The woman fled the scene with the carton into the nearby dry Todd River.

She was later found in the river bed with the beer and charged with robbery.
