A trainee driver learning to operate a city bus in a Paris suburb has plunged the vehicle into the Seine River after making a steering error, authorities and French media report.

After leaving a bus station in the city of Juvisy-sur-Orge, the driver rammed a parked car and plunged both vehicles into the river, where they sank.

The city thanked the rescue workers and first responders who pulled the four occupants from the water without any major injuries.

The newspaper Le Parisien reported, citing eyewitnesses, that several members of a rowing club were out on the Seine when they saw the bus fall into the water and immediately rushed to help.

The trainee, a 25-year-old woman who was under the supervision of a driving instructor, was taken into police custody after the accident.

The prefecture said the emergency services were on site with 34 firefighters, 60 police officers as well as divers and numerous emergency vehicles.

The bus and the car were later recovered from the Seine by two cranes.
