A huge search effort is underway for a snorkeler missing north of Perth.

The search began on Thursday afternoon for a man who disappeared during a dive off Ledge Point.

PolAir and Lancelin Sea Rescue were scouring the ocean near Lancelin, where an empty tinny was spotted from the air but it is unknown who the boat belongs to.

Police said a number of resources, including Water Police, were deployed in an effort to locate the missing male snorkeler.
