Geraldton’s Isla Mulligan has been selected to represent Australia in water polo at the Fina Cadet World Championships held in Larissa, Greece later this year.

Water Polo Australia announced the team last week with Mulligan one of three players from WA to continue a pathway she started when she was just a baby.

Mulligan is a goalkeeper, the same as her father Mick Mulligan, who was her first coach and introduction to the sport.

She started playing water polo in Geraldton for B52’s at the age of 10, working closely with Ray Pead who put her in goals at the age of 13 for Geraldton women’s country week.

It was a move that paid off being selected as all star goalkeeper for in the past two editions.

She moved to Perth in February 2022 where she currently plays for Triton Water Polo Club and trains with the UWA Torpedos Squad.

Mulligan said the shock of her selection was still yet to set in.

“I’m nervous and excited at the same time, the reality of what I’ve achieved I’m still in shock,” she said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to train with Aussie goalkeepers Gabi Palm and Claire Durston as well as current Stingers coach Paul Oberman where I’ve learnt so much already.

“None of this would have been possible without the support of my local clubs B52’s and Triton.”

The World Championships will be held from August 20-27, with training camps beginning in Sydney at the end of June.
