Mid West facilities and attractions to benefit from State Government’s $165 million tourism funding package

Mid West facilities and attractions have been served their piece of a massive $165 million funding pie to boost outdoor adventure tourism as part of next month’s State Budget.

The Cook Government unveiled the Outdoor Adventure Tourism package on Sunday, committing to new and upgraded boating facilities, campgrounds, trails and tourism attractions across WA to boost visitor numbers, support local businesses, and diversify local economies.

Of the total funding, $82.4m is being invested in boating and maritime facilities, including $17.5m to extend the northern breakwater at Jurien Bay Boat Harbour, which aims to improve water quality at the marina and open up private investment opportunities.

The community and Opposition have long called for State Government action to fix design issues at the harbour. The build-up of seaweed and sand in the marina has been a regular problem, with low levels of water in the harbour leading to fish kills and an unbearable smell.

Kalbarri will receive $8.1m to fund the first stage of the town’s foreshore and beaches revitalisation initiative.

Campgrounds across WA will also benefit from $17.1m of the funding, including $1.5m for a new 25-site campground at Kangaroo Point near Cervantes.

The funding package also includes $8.1m for infrastructure initiatives — including a jetty, extra moorings and refurbished camp — at the Abrolhos Islands, which was announced while Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti was in Geraldton on Friday.

“WA is famous for its stunning beaches and natural landscapes like our national parks and hiking trails — these are some of the key drawcards in bringing tourists to our beautiful State,” Ms Saffioti said.

“By improving and investing in these facilities and sites, we’re ensuring WA remains a world-class tourism destination of choice for travellers, particularly in our regions.”

Premier Roger Cook said the Government wanted every West Australian to enjoy the State’s great outdoors.

“This investment will deliver a whole new visitor experience at campgrounds, hiking trails and boat ramps from the Kimberley to the Great Southern and right across the State,” he said.
