School zones are back in force across Geraldton this week as students head back to their classrooms after the July break.

This week, I want to take the time to remind our drivers to slow down and be aware of their surroundings when dropping kids off and passing through these zones.

We’ve had some pretty average weather in the district recently with the reduced visibility and loss of traction increasing the risk of accidents.

I’d urge everyone to use a bit of caution when driving though school zones because the last thing we’d like to see is an accident occurring.

Our traffic officers will be out and about on the streets over the coming weeks using mobile speed detection guns to enforce the 40km/h limit and responsible driving.

MORE POLICE WRAP

When dropping kids off, we often see people stop their vehicles in the middle of the road to let children exit. This is dangerous behaviour and can lead to traffic jams and risky actions from other drivers.

We all know when kids start and finish school.

It can be difficult to spot them all as they move between vehicles and walk along the streets.

I’d urge all drivers to be mindful, when parking or pulling out at a school zone, that there will be kids cutting in front of cars.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. The last thing we want is an accident at one of our schools this winter.
