Walk on in: Geraldton Buccaneers secure services of two-time NBL1 MVP and championship star Devondrick Walker

The Geraldton Buccaneers have revealed another huge signing as preparations for their title defence ramp up, calling on the services of two-time NBL1 West MVP Devondrick Walker for the 2026 season. Originally from Dallas, Walker boasts a lengthy background playing basketball around the world, including NBL stints with South East Melbourne Phoenix and Brisbane Bullets. Walker knows what winning an NBL1 title takes, having won the championship with Rockingham Flames in 2022 — also named grand final MVP. Alongside his title, he’s also a two-time NBL1 West MVP and made the NBL1 West First team in 2022 and 2023, providing some serious star power to the reigning champions. While a terrific player, he has also dabbled in coaching and was assistant coach for 2025-26 WNBL runners-up, Perth Lynx. Buccs coach Dayle Joseph said it was a “huge signing” for his side. “Devondrick is a highly sought-after player around Australia and we’re excited that he and his family have chosen to call Geraldton home,” he said. “A high basketball IQ player with exquisite basketball skills, Devondrick is a former league MVP and championship player who makes everyone around him better. “We believe he’ll play a huge role in our future success.” Not only is he an elite shooter, averaging 21.79 points, 1.93 rebounds and 4.93 assists during his most recent NBL1 stint in 2024, Walker also brings strong on-court smarts and leadership. Walker is now the third new recruit to put pen to paper, with former Warwick Senator Cooper Creek and US import Josh Banks also signing with the Buccs. Fan favourite Verle Williams also re-signed with Geraldton for another season. With the departures of superstar Johny Narkle and Ryan Blanchett, and captain Aaron Ralph’s retirement, the new-look list is starting to take more shape as the Buccs enter the final stages of pre-season. On Saturday night, the Buccs will travel to Perth to play a scratch match against Binar Maali at Swan Active in Beechboro. They open their season with a grand final rematch against the Warwick Senators on March 28 at Activewest Stadium.
