Geraldton water polo players will have more opportunities than ever to play in national competitions as the local season tips off today.

The Geraldton Water Polo Association’s Julia Gourley said Water Polo WA’s Northern Pathways program would make it easier for juniors to play nationally.

“It’s (the program) open to anybody,” Gourley said.

“All the juniors have that opportunity to feed into that national selection.

“It’s much easier now for us, having that program available.

“We’ve got this new program and the outcome of the program is for these juniors between 14 and 16 to get picked for national selection.

“It’s the first time in quite a while Water Polo WA has had this money to really grow our juniors.

“It’s readily available.”

She said places for this season were already full but people could participate in future seasons.

She said the association was thankful it had managed to get the pool space to schedule a full season of competition, with the outdoor pool of the Geraldton Aquarena being renovated.

Demons player Kobi Toomath and B52’s Isla Mulligan and Evie Prout travelled to the national junior water polo titles in Brisbane last year with the under-18s side of the Perth-based Triton club.

The trip meant they were able to be coached by Kali Oberman, daughter of Australian Olympian Paul Oberman, the assistant coach for the men’s national side.

B52’s Indi Smith and Keshi McCagh also joined the trip, representing the University of WA.

B-grade matches start at 5.30pm today at the Geraldton Aquarena.

Juniors, B and C-grade games run on Sunday. Demons play B52s in the men’s A-grade on Sunday afternoon before Rats play the country week composite team.

Serpents play Rats in the women’s A-grade and Demons play B52s.

Water Polo WA said WA will be entering teams in the under-19 national championships for people born in 2002 and younger being held in Perth on December 9-12.
