Double celebrations for Shire of Pingelly at grand openings of two new $800k bush fire brigade buildings

Determined not to do things by halves, the Shire of Pingelly held two grand openings on June 3 to celebrate a major upgrade to the area’s firefighting capabilities. Volunteers, Department of Fire and Emergency Services representatives and the member for Central Wheatbelt Lachlan Hunter opened new bush fire brigade buildings in East and West Pingelly, providing community hubs and support for local firefighters. The first ceremony was at West Pingelly followed by one in East Pingelly, 45km away, an hour later. Shire of Pingelly chief executive Andrew Dover had been worried that the West Pingelly fire station would not have an appliance to put in it until DFES promised to provide a truck on permanent loan. With a truck already stationed at East Pingelly, Mr Dover was toasting the provision of two new sheds and a full complement of appliances. “It’s a really big win; the shire has been battling for 20 years to get a truck for West Pingelly,” he said. “We have previously had zero sheds and one truck and now we have more than doubled our capacity. “We are very, very happy and we now have a great set-up.” He said the sheds could be used by members of the community as well as the shire’s bush fire brigades as they include function rooms and kitchens as well as storage, communication rooms and training areas. The buildings cost $800,000 each and were funded partially by DFES and partially by the shire. “They will be managed by our bush fire brigades but if people want to hold a knitting circle in them, they can,” Mr Dover said. “They can be community hubs because they are well positioned and will be great places for people to get together. “It’s also our experience that wherever there is a shed there is a stronger brigade because the volunteers feel there is a community behind them.” Mr Hunter said local volunteers deserved to have high-standard facilities. “It was a fantastic day in Pingelly celebrating the official opening of two new bushfire brigade sheds, one in the east and one in the west,” he commented on social media. “For years, local brigades have operated without a permanent base. “Now, they finally have two places to call home. “Our Wheatbelt volunteers go above and beyond to protect their communities; they deserve the infrastructure to support them when it matters most,” he said. The truck being loaned by DFES is a 2.4 appliance which means it’s a four-wheel-drive vehicle able to hold 2000 litres of water. The East Pingelly truck is a 4.4 holding 4000 litres. Mr Dover said he hoped the West Pingelly truck could be upgraded to a 4.4 in the future.
