Katanning Primary School’s P&C committee launches Cooking in Harmony with recipes from all over the world

A cookbook which aims to reflect the diversity of Katanning has been produced by the primary school’s Parents and Citizens Committee featuring recipes from local luminaries. Cooking in Harmony was launched at the school by Roe MLA Peter Rundle and includes recipes from many of the places represented by the 40 or so nationalities who live in Katanning. Mr Rundle was one of the book’s sponsors, as was Rick Wilson, the Federal member for O’Connor. Mr Rundle’s wife Andrea contributed a tasty recipe for yabbies with poached pears and asparagus while other offerings came from local people whose friends, families or backgrounds included countries including Malaysia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Germany, South Africa and Italy. Mr Rundle said cooking was not one of his specialities and because his wife had been a home economics teacher, she was the obvious choice to contribute. “She was much better placed to provide a recipe. My contribution would probably have been to catch the yabbies,” he said. He added that he had been a former pupil of the primary school and still had a close association with it. “I was happy to support the book, it’s a great reflection of a town which is extremely diverse,” he said. “We have a Harmony Festival, so it seemed like the right name.” P&C committee member Sharon Haeusler was the main organiser of the project, and she thanked the sponsors and Andrew Pritchard, who provided the school’s history, and Wendy Sheridan, who did the artwork. “The book is more than a fundraiser, it’s a gift to our school and a record of the unique community we live in,” she said. Students at the primary school have been cooking some of the recipes. “These stories and meals connect us, not only through eating the yummy food but through the friendship, history and traditions they have shared,” Ms Haeusler said.
