UGSFL 2025: Katanning crunch Boddington on their home turf in battle for top four, Hawks winning run continues

Katanning Wanderers produced a brilliant win over reigning premiers Boddington, booting 16 goals in wet conditions to strengthen their Upper Great Southern Football League finals hopes on Sunday. The Eagles, who sit one spot above the Tigers on the ladder, got more than they bargained for as the visitors were ruthless in their attack, securing an upset 45-point win in round 11 of the competition. Despite the downpour, the Eagles took off with the ball and landed two swift majors in the first five minutes of the game before the Tigers responded with their own, making for a constant back and forth that ended in a two-point lead for the home side at quarter-time. The Tigers were wild with their charge in second term, crunching their opponent with ease led by a dominant display from best players Jake Blight, Toby Quartermaine, Zane Sutherland, Caleb Keley and James Laurino. Four goals to nil in the second pushed the Tigers to a healthy half-time lead as they went on to secure their sixth win of the season. The Tigers booted five goals in the third term and two in the last on their way to a vital 16.9 (105) to 9.6 (60) victory. Joshua McMahon, Ryan Pontillo, Tyrone Roe and Tramain Way each booted three majors for the visitors. Eagles spearhead Lloyd Padwick kicked five goals in a losing affair while Troy Egerton-Warburton, Dylan Kirk, Ben and Matthew Sherry, Jarrod Salmeri and Lewis Parsons were strong contributors for the defending premiers, who face a tricky run home. The Tigers are level on points with the Eagles heading into the final three rounds of the season. Kukerin-Dumbleyung remain firmly in the finals mix after a 23-point win over Brookton-Pingelly in Brookton on Sunday. The Cougars led at every change and despite losing the final term they notched a fifth win of the season to stay one game outside the top four. Howie Clegg starred with five goals in the 12.9 (81) to 8.10 (58) triumph, while teammates Toby Perrin, Liam Park, Austin Shotter, Charlie Keast and Stockton Cruz-Shotter shone. Finn O’Reilly finished with six goals for the Panthers. Wickepin virtually stitched up a top two finish and finals double chance, beating Williams by 26 points in Wickepin. In a low-scoring affair, the Warriors kicked three unanswered goals in the second term on their way to a 7.10 (52) to 4.2 (26) result. The home side were best served by Kendal Ballard, Miles Franklin, Ryan Melvin, Sam Fortini, Jordan Flavel and Regan Wilson, while Kayle Kirby kicked three majors. Wagin tested flag fancies Narrogin in the opening term but the Hawks extended their winning streak to 10 games on Sunday. The margin was just eight points at quarter-time at Clayton Road Oval but the Bulldogs lost Zac South and John Lee to injury as they fell 72 points short in the end. Four goals to nil in the second handed the Hawks the momentum by the long break. The home side kicked nine goals in the rampant second half to win 17.15 (117) to 6.9 (45) as Coen Jackman proved a handful, with five goals for the Hawks.
