Brisbane on track to ease virus rules

Brisbane is on track for an easing of coronavirus restrictions with a local cluster contained, but police are yet to find how the outbreak began at a quarantine hotel.

The state has now gone 11 days without a new local COVID-19 case, with one infection recorded in an overseas traveller from Brazil who was already in hotel quarantine.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says restrictions including mandatory mask-wearing in public places indoors and social distancing limits of 1.5m are on track to be scaled back at 1am on Friday.

"We're not out of the woods yet. We've got a few more days, so let's just see how the next three days go," she said.

However, Queensland is still yet to give any timeframe on reopening the border with Greater Sydney as there are seven unlinked virus cases in the NSW capital.

The last transmission linked to an outbreak of the highly contagious UK strain at Brisbane's Grand Chancellor quarantine hotel on January 7.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said authorities had tested 864 people linked to a Hotel Grand Chancellor cluster but none had tested positive, indicating the outbreak has been contained.

Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski implied that the police investigation may never work out exactly how the virus jumped between guests and staff at the hotel.

"We are still not seeing anything obvious that causes us concern," he told reporters.

Commissioner Gollschewski also thanked people in Greater Brisbane for complying with all the health directions and there was no evidence of complacency in the lead-up to restrictions easing.

"In fact, we've issued no fines in the last 24 hours, and only handed out 28 masks, which is quite remarkable given the size of the area we're talking about," he said.
