Measles alert as St John of God Midland, Woolworths, Kmart in Perth metro area identified as exposure sites

Health authorities have issued a measles alert after a traveller infected with the disease returned from overseas.

WA Health released the warning on Monday afternoon, listing almost a dozen exposure sites across the Perth metro area.

St John of God Midland Hospital’s emergency department was listed twice in the same day, as well as several trips to grocery stores between March 5 and 11.

People who visited the below locations at the below times are advised to monitor for symptoms for seven to 18 days.

Measles is a highly infectious virus that spreads via airborne droplets to people who are near. Droplets in the air may still infect people entering a room up to half an hour after an infected person has left.

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore eyes, runny nose and a cough, followed by a bright red blotchy rash three or four days later.

The rash usually starts on the face before spreading to the rest of the body and can last up to a week.

It’s the fifth case of the measles in WA so far this year, after a record season in 2025 with more than 60 infections.

Measles-containing vaccines can protect from the virus, and health authorities are urging people to check their jab status to ensure they have had two doses.

Vaccinated people and people born before 1966 are considered immune to measles.
