The Tasmanian government has rejected a proposal to quarantine international students in Hobart on behalf of NSW.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet was keen to strike deal to salvage the state's lucrative $14 billion education sector after National Cabinet failed to agree on finding a way to bring back overseas students.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein confirmed on Tuesday an approach had been made by the NSW government to quarantine international students for 14 days.

"We have advised this is not under consideration with our priority remaining the safe management of seasonal workers entering the state and our own international students when public health advice is that it is safe to do so," he said.

"International students are the lifeblood of many university communities across Sydney and the regions. Their return supports countless jobs from small businesses and shopping centres to cafes and corner stores," he said.

Shadow Treasurer Walt Secord said it was critical to the long-term economic recovery of NSW.

"Once you lose an international student to Canada or the United States or Europe, then you don't lose them for one year, you lose them for four to six years.
