Usually, a trip to the shop for milk ends with a bottle of hi-lo — but for one Perth punter, it ended with him becoming a millionaire.
The WA man, who hails from Caversham in Perth’s north-east, was just one of five lucky Aussies who nabbed a slice of the $6 million Saturday Lotto prize pie on the weekend — with the punter being the only winner in the State.
While making a pit stop at Beechboro News and Lottery Centre ahead of the draw, the septuagenarian suddenly decided to pick up a lotto ticket alongside his everyday essentials.
The spur-of-the-moment decision would end up transforming the Sandgroper’s life, with his Slikpik earning him a huge division one prize worth $1.25 million.
“I still can’t believe it — I never thought I’d win,” he said.
The retiree revealed he acts as a full-time carer to his wife and said the huge lotto jackpot would let them plan their futures.
“My wife and I have been talking about moving into a retirement village close by, and we’re ready to make those plans a reality,” he said.
It wasn’t just the winner and his wife benefitting from the jackpot however — with the pair also revealing their philanthropic plans for the money.
The punter told Lotterywest he would be making significant donations to Silver Chain, which offers health and aged care services, as well as a slew of childhood cancer charities.
Lotterywest spokesperson Jennie Fitzhardinge said it was wonderful to hear that the jackpot would support an older couple.
“This prize money gives the couple more freedom to enjoy their retirement and focus on the things that matter most to them,” Ms Fitzhardinge said.
“They will be able to enjoy greater flexibility and peace of mind as the couple plans for the future and considers the support that may assist them along the way.”
The winning numbers for the Saturday Lotto draw were 6, 25, 27, 2, 31, and 40. The supplementary numbers were 24 and 35.
