Sustainable fishery gets the tick

Abrolhos Octopus has become the second octopus fishery in the world to receive the coveted Marine Stewardship Council accreditation for sustainable fishing.

Director Dom O’Callaghan said this was timely for the new business.

“We are very chuffed,” he said.

“It’s taken us a while to perfect it but now we are exporting several countries it is a boost to our business.”

After 18 months’ operating Mr O’Callaghan said the Geraldton business was exporting to Europe, the USA and Singapore, with a Japanese contingent awaiting the MSC accreditation to place their first order.

“Abrolhos Octopus is the major licence holder in Zone 1 which operates out of Geraldton,” he said.

“The CEO Adrian Hobbs and I have invested $16 million in licences, factory, boats and traps to build a new industry in this region.

“The octopus fishery obtaining MSC status only adds to the exceptional seafood reputation of this unique and pristine environment.”
