$20 million development starts for upgraded Port Hedland International Airport

New airport lounges, check-in facilities and lush gardens feature in concept designs for Port Hedland International Airport’s highly anticipated stage two works. It comes as dignitaries officially launched the $20 million stage one landside redevelopment project last Tuesday, featuring an upgraded entry and exit road, carpark and hire facilities and the replacement of ageing underground infrastructure. Changes to carpark facilities also included a forecourt to preserve the site’s ancient boab tree. New paving and a walkway to improve pedestrian safety is under way to complete the transformation of the airport facade. A showcase of the latest concept designs for stage two works, including upgraded check-in facilities and an airport lounge, was also on display, following development delays due to the pandemic. Port Hedland International Airport chairperson Cheryl Edwardes said the upgrades marked the start of a new era for the airport which would not have been possible without her team who grappled with unprecedented global conditions and development delays. “The small 12-person team at PHIA undertook this project during the pandemic whilst maintaining full operations to the airport in a safe and secure manner,” she said. “That dedication saw the Port Hedland to Perth route shoot up the national ranking at the height of COVID 19 last year - jumping from 30 to six (nationally) and further underlining the successful effort to keep the airport operational. “We are proud to be transforming the most significant transport hub, supporting the largest bulk tonnage port in the world.” An earlier $20 million development delivered a new taxiway, enhanced runway and improvements to lighting. Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said the investment into works added value to all airport uses and visitors to the town. Stage two works are expected to commence in 2022.
